"Your hand opens and closes, and opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralyzed. Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and co-ordianted as bird wings."- Rumi

Coming Into The Body

Our body is the foundation for physical and spiritual manifestation and the rock of our wellbeing in all aspects of life.  After all, where would we be without a body? What would we accomplish in life? Not much!

Nonetheless, we take our body for granted in our rush through daily life. This may work fine, until we develop physical symptoms that demand our attention. When we relate to symptoms as an opportunity to listen to our body we create a more balanced mind/body relationship. We begin to connect with an authentic sense of wellbeing through paying attention to our bodily sensations.

The Body Speaks In Sensation - Why Bodywork Works

Our sense of touch is fundamental to the development and health of our central nervous system. The human nervous system is incomplete at birth. Touch is essential for it’s continued healthy development. An infant deprived of adequate touch may die or have limited developmental capacity. Throughout life our nervous system continues to grow and learn about its internal and external environment through our sense of touch. Touch releases a flood of neurological information into our system that we experience as sensation moving through the body. Interpreting and responding to this language of sensation can be challenging.

Through receiving bodywork we cultivate our capacity to ‘hear’ the body’s language by experiencing sensations as they arise in the moment. A deeper somatic awareness develops in response, allowing us to shift patterns of behavior that led us away from balance in the first place. When the body is attended to in this way it offers us everything we need to know to experience wellbeing as each moment unfolds. Through somatic awareness our central nervous system grows it’s capacity to embody presence.

Devon Carter is a Certified Massage Therapist with 35+ years experience in the field of Mind/Body/Spirit integration both as a teacher and in private practice.

Devon offers 60 or 90 minute sessions at her office in San Rafael California. Her bodywork approach encourages people to connect with their intrinsic movement toward wholeness through Craniosacral Therapy, Orthopedic Massage, Soft Tissue Mobilization, Acupressure, Somatic Awareness and Mindfulness practices.

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, light touch therapy based on the principals of cranial osteopathy. It uses subtle movements to unwind holding patterns in the body and restrictions in the craniosacral system. Releasing these restrictions improves nervous system function and has a positive impact on all other tissues of the body. For more information about Craniosacral Therapy please contact the Upledger Institute http://www.upledger.com/

Orthopedic Massage and Soft Tissue Mobilization are an advanced system of massage and manual therapy that are a profoundly relaxing, efficient and effective treatment for acute and chronic pain caused by soft tissue imbalance. These are the foundational techniques used in the Hendrickson Method as developed by Dr Tom Hendrickson. For more information about the benefits of these techniques contact the Hendrickson Method http://www.hendricksonmethod.com/three-techniques-of-hendrickson-method/

Acupressure is a light touch therapy that uses finger pressure on the same system of points and meridians as acupuncture only without needles. Gentle pressure on specific acupressure points increases relaxation, and improves circulation of both the blood and the body’s life force energy to aid in healing.
